Pool Chemical Automation
A chemical automation system continuously measures your water and doses sanitizer or pH adjuster to hold it in range — closer to a thermostat than a one-time treatment. It reduces manual testing, but it does not remove the need for it entirely.
What it actually measures and does
A chemical automation controller uses probes in the plumbing line to continuously read ORP (oxidation-reduction potential, a proxy for sanitizer effectiveness) and pH, then doses a chemical feeder to correct either value automatically — typically liquid chlorine or an acid/base for pH.
This is different from a salt system, which generates chlorine but does not measure or adjust anything. Chemical automation is the monitoring-and-dosing layer, and the two are often installed together: a salt cell producing the chlorine, an ORP controller confirming it is at the right level and topping up with liquid feed if not.
What it genuinely reduces
- Manual testing frequency. Continuous monitoring catches drift between your own tests, so problems get corrected before they become visible.
- Under- and over-dosing. Automated small, frequent doses tend to hold a tighter range than periodic manual shock treatment.
- Algae risk from a missed dose. A vacation or a forgotten week no longer means the sanitizer level drifts unmonitored.
What it does not replace
- Periodic manual testing. Probes drift and need calibration. Manufacturers typically recommend confirming readings with a manual test every one to two weeks.
- Other chemistry parameters. Alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer are not measured by most residential ORP/pH systems and still need periodic manual attention.
- Physical maintenance. Brushing, vacuuming, skimming and filter cleaning are unaffected by chemical automation — it addresses chemistry, not debris.
- Chemical feed stock. The feeder still needs its chlorine or acid reservoir refilled periodically.

Is it worth it over a salt system alone?
For most residential pools, a salt system plus periodic manual testing is enough — chemical automation adds cost and complexity that pays off more clearly on larger pools, pools with heavy or inconsistent bather load, or households that want the lowest possible hands-on maintenance and are comfortable paying for it.
