Pool Light Repair

A pool light is a mains-powered fixture sitting underwater. That single fact determines everything about how this repair should be approached — and it is the strongest argument for doing it while the pool is already drained.

Safety first, and this one is not negotiable

Why lights fail

  • Bulb or LED module end of life. The most common and least concerning cause. Incandescent bulbs last a few years; LED modules ten or more.
  • Water in the fixture. A failed lens gasket lets water in. It destroys the fixture and can create an electrical fault.
  • Corroded contacts. Moisture in the niche corroding the socket or terminals.
  • Damaged cord. The cord running through the conduit from the niche to the junction box, often damaged by rodents or during other work.
  • GFCI faults. A GFCI that trips is doing its job — treat it as reporting a real fault rather than a nuisance.
  • Transformer failure. On low-voltage systems, the transformer rather than the light.

What it costs

Do it during a remodel if you can

Replacing a light in a full pool means either a diver or partially draining it. Replacing one in a pool that is already empty for resurfacing is straightforward work with a ladder.

That is why lighting appears on nearly every remodel add-on list. If your pool is within a couple of years of resurfacing and the light is merely dim rather than faulty, waiting is usually the economical choice — as long as there is no electrical fault, which changes the calculation entirely.

Is upgrading to LED worth it?

For a fixture that has failed, yes, almost always. LED pool lights use a fraction of the power of incandescent units and last several times as long, so the replacement decision is straightforward once you are paying for the labour anyway.

  • Much lower power draw. A meaningful difference on a light run several hours a night through a season.
  • Far longer life. Which matters disproportionately here, because the labour of reaching an underwater fixture dominates the cost.
  • Colour options. Colour-changing LEDs are the common upgrade, at a few hundred dollars more per fixture.
  • Retrofit available. Most LED modules fit existing niches, so the niche and conduit usually stay.

What this project needs measured

Measurements are only requested when they change the price of the work you selected. Everything below is collected inside the estimator — you can enter dimensions you already know or measure as you go.

Required

No measurement required

This project is diagnosed from symptoms and equipment details rather than dimensions.

What the estimator will ask you

  • How many lights, and how many are out
  • Incandescent or LED
  • Whether the breaker or GFCI trips
  • Brand and model if visible
  • Whether anyone has felt anything unusual in the water
  • Photos of the light and the electrical panel
  • Whether a remodel is planned

How to read a PoolSavr estimate

  1. Step 1

    Instant estimate

Based on your project selections and general pricing assumptions. Useful for deciding whether a project is realistic.

  2. Step 2

    Measured estimate

Uses your pool, spa, or deck dimensions to price the work against the areas actually being resurfaced, tiled, or replaced.

  3. Step 3

    Contractor proposal

Prepared by a licensed professional after inspecting the site. This is the only number that becomes a contract.

PoolSavr is an estimating and matching platform. We do not perform pool work ourselves — licensed local professionals do. Contractors pay PoolSavr for qualified project leads, which is how the estimating tools stay free for homeowners. Frequently asked questions

Why is my pool light not working?
Most often the bulb or LED module has reached end of life. Other causes are water in the fixture from a failed gasket, corroded contacts, a damaged cord, or a failed transformer on low-voltage systems. If the breaker or GFCI is tripping, treat it as an electrical fault and call a licensed electrician.
Can I change a pool light bulb myself?
It is strongly discouraged. The fixture is mains-powered and sits underwater, the removal procedure varies by manufacturer, and reassembling the gasket incorrectly lets water in and creates a genuine hazard. This is qualified-technician or licensed-electrician work.
How much does it cost to replace a pool light?
A bulb replacement runs $150–$350, an LED module $300–$700, and a full LED fixture $450–$1,200 installed. Colour-changing upgrades are $700–$1,500 per fixture. All of it is considerably cheaper during a remodel when the pool is already drained.
My pool light trips the breaker. What does that mean?
That the safety device is detecting a fault and doing exactly what it is designed to do. Do not reset it repeatedly and do not use the pool. Switch the circuit off at the panel and have a licensed electrician diagnose it — this is the one pool fault that can be life-threatening.
Should I wait and do the light during a resurfacing?
If the light is merely dim or the bulb has failed and there is no electrical fault, and resurfacing is within a couple of years, waiting usually makes economic sense — an empty pool makes it far cheaper. If there is any electrical fault, do not wait.
