Rough Pool Surface
A pool surface that scrapes feet and shreds swimsuits is the most common reason people start looking at resurfacing. It is not urgent, it will not improve on its own, and there is a narrow window where a cheaper fix still works.
Is it urgent?
No. A rough surface is a comfort and cosmetic problem, not a safety or structural one, and a pool can be swum in for years in this state. The reason not to ignore it indefinitely is that the underlying cause keeps progressing — a finish eroding badly enough to be abrasive is also becoming porous, which raises chemical consumption and gives algae somewhere to take hold.
What causes it
Pool plaster is cement and marble dust. Marble dust is calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate dissolves in water that is even slightly aggressive. Roughness is what that dissolution looks like once enough material is gone.
- Normal age. Every finish erodes eventually. White plaster typically reaches this point at 7–12 years, quartz at 10–15, pebble at 15–20.
- Low pH or low alkalinity. Aggressive water dissolves calcium out of the finish continuously. The single largest controllable factor in how long a finish lasts.
- Low calcium hardness. Water low in calcium will pull it from the plaster to reach equilibrium. Common in soft-water regions and after a refill with very soft water.
- Repeated acid washing. Every acid wash removes a layer of finish. Legitimate occasionally; ruinous as a maintenance habit.
- Exposed aggregate. On pebble and quartz finishes, roughness can mean the cement matrix has eroded and the aggregate now stands proud.
- Poor original application. A finish troweled badly, applied in bad weather, or started up carelessly can be rough within a few years.
What you can safely check
- Run your hand along the wall at different depths. Roughness concentrated at the waterline suggests chemistry; roughness everywhere suggests age.
- Look for colour change. Grey or brown patches mean the finish has worn through to aggregate or the shell beneath.
- Test your water. Check pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness. Persistently low readings tell you why this happened, and what to fix afterwards.
- Tap the surface where you can reach it. A hollow sound means the finish has debonded, which changes the answer from "worn" to "failing".
- Work out the finish age. The most useful single number. If it is near the end of its expected life, that settles it.
What not to do
- Do not sand or grind the surface yourself. It removes more material from an already thin finish and produces an uneven result that is visible for the rest of the finish’s life.
- Do not acid wash as a first response. Acid washing removes material. On a surface that is rough because material has already been lost, it makes the underlying problem worse.
- Do not paint over it. Pool paint on plaster is a short-lived cosmetic fix that complicates and adds cost to the eventual resurfacing.
- Do not ignore the chemistry. If aggressive water caused this, a new finish will go the same way on the same schedule.

Making the next finish last longer

- Choose a harder finish. Quartz and pebble tolerate imperfect chemistry far better than white plaster. In hard-water regions this is close to a default.
- Take the start-up period seriously. The first month of brushing and controlled chemistry sets the surface. This single factor separates a finish that lasts twelve years from one rough in six.
- Watch the saturation index, not just pH. Calcium hardness and alkalinity matter as much as pH for keeping water non-aggressive.
- Reserve acid washing for genuine need. It is a remedy, not maintenance.
