Pool Acid Wash
An acid wash removes a thin layer of the interior finish to strip scale and light staining. It is a legitimate, occasional treatment — and, because it consumes finish material, a poor choice as routine maintenance.
What an acid wash does
A diluted acid solution is applied to the drained pool surface and lightly scrubbed, dissolving a thin layer of the finish along with the scale, light staining and dullness sitting on it. It genuinely brightens a dingy surface — the cost is that a small amount of the finish itself goes with it every time.
When it is the right call
- Heavy scale that will not respond to chemical treatment. Where a sequestering agent or lighter brushing has not been enough.
- General dullness on a finish with years of life left. Restores brightness without replacing the whole surface.
- Preparing a pool for sale. A quick, meaningful appearance improvement for a fraction of resurfacing cost.
- The finish has had zero or one acid wash previously. Each wash removes material, so this is a limited-use treatment.
When to resurface instead
- The finish has already had two or more acid washes.
- The surface is rough as well as dull — acid washing does not restore lost material, only removes more.
- Staining is deep rather than surface-level and has already been through the vitamin-C and chlorine tests without lifting.
- The finish is near the end of its expected service life anyway.
